Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
