British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
