New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying these drugs should be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
