Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, following the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
